NEWS CLIPPINGS

Greenwood Middle School fifth-grader Needham Core,

during Smith's character education presentation at the school.
North Carolina Senator Charlie Albertson
(left) and James "Bonecrusher" Smith (right) -
both natives of Duplin County - spoke to students in the
Intervention Program at East Duplin High School about character
education.
Intervention students at
East Duplin High School had some special visitors on February
9.
James "Bonecrusher" Smith, former
world boxing heavyweight champion, spoke to the students
about character education.
I've designed my own character education
speaking tool." Smith said. "I spoke on Trinity
Broadcasting Network and since then have received emails
from all over the world asking me to speak."
Smith grew up in Magnolia in Duplin County
and graduated from James Keenan High School, Warsaw. He
has spend the last 20 years of his life in Lillington and
hopes to retire near the beach, possibly in Wilmington.
"In my 18 years of boxing I never
had a negative thing said about me. That's difficult--that's
character worth promoting. These kids can use that as an
example."
The Intervention Program is targeted to
at-risk students. It is designed to help improve attendance,
behavior, and academic performance.
Participation in the program is optional."
said East Duplin High School Assistant Principal Willie
Gillespie. "Students are chosen because we feel they
can benefit from the program."
The pro boxer caught the attention of
the group quickly. He told the teens that character education
is about personal growth. He also informed them of a summer
camp that will be held in the North Carolina Mountains.
"One student from East Duplin will
be chosen to attend the camp for free."

North Carolina Senator Charlie
Albertson also spoke to the group during the assembly. As
a special treat, he sang three songs for the students.
"Anything the mind can conceive and
believe, it can achieve." Sen. Albertson said. "I
want each of you to think about what you want to do in your
life, be determined, keep a positive attitude, and remember
that there is no one else in the world like you."
